<P>Accreditation of undergraduate professional education programs is an important element for the assurance of quality and the maintenance of professional standards against national and international standards.<SPAN>  Completion of an accredited course of study is generally a key criterion for registration under government legislation or membership of a professional body.<SPAN>  </P> <P></P> <P>The “accrediting body” is usually the professional body representing a particular discipline.<SPAN>  In some cases it may be a statutory body established for this purpose.<SPAN>  Individual educational institutions may voluntarily request an “accrediting body” to review their education programs for accreditation.</P> <P></P> <P><B>Regular discussion forum for professional bodies</B></P> <P></P> <P>Professions Australia has established a regular discussion forum for “accrediting bodies”.<SPAN>  The forum was formed in response to suggestions from participants in Professions Australia’s workshop <I>Accreditation of Professional Education Courses </I>conducted in late 2005.<SPAN>  It was decided that the discussion forum should be open to both members and non-members of Professions Australia because of the value in sharing information across the professions.<SPAN>  </P> <P></P> <P>The purpose of the forum is to:</P> <P></P> <P> <UL> <LI>Share experiences and learn from others;</LI> <LI>Discuss current issues impacting on accreditation arrangements cross the professions;</LI> <LI>Facilitate information exchange between professional bodies.</LI></UL> <P></P> <P></P> <P><B>Outcome of first meeting</B></P> <P></P> <P>The first discussion forum was held on 9 May 2006.<SPAN>  In addition to discussing a range of issues (including undertaking joint accreditation processes, the Bologna agreement, accreditation of undifferentiated programs offered offshore,   extending accreditation to programs offered by RTO’s at AQF advanced diploma, bachelor and associated degree level and shared auditor training) the forum agreed:</P> <P></P> <P> <P dir=ltr>*   A record of discussion will be prepared following each meeting.<BR><BR>*   Meetings will be held every six months.<BR><BR>*   The agenda for each meeting will focus on one major issue (show and tell) with provision for minor agenda items. <SPAN> <BR><BR>*   Professions Australia to act as the central point to facilitate information requests and exchange of information. <BR><BR>*   Professions Australia website to include an “accreditation” page with relevant links; </P> <P></P> <P> <P><B>Cost of participation</B></P> <P>It was agreed at the first meeting that participants would pay a small fee to cover the cost to Professions Australia of conducting each meeting:</P> <P></P> <P>
