I = 4i: Getting value from your relationship with Professions Australia
Professional associations are continually under pressure to provide value for money. Rightly so. We at Professions Australia (PA) see the value for money equation in specific terms:
I = 4i.
Investment
I is the investment that is made in PA by member associations on behalf of their individual professional members. It is (partly) the annual fees member associations pay.
So 4i is the return that member associations expect to receive from their investment: better information; greater interaction; improved internet presence; increased influence.
Information
Since April 2002 we have put out Alerts, providing information on developments in Canberra affecting PA members. We have also put out quartely Newsletters, providing commentary, analysis and updates on matters of interest to professionals.
We see one of PA’s key roles as providing information to our member associations and other professionals. Knowledge Base on our website is a database of useful links and we will augment it with commissioned White Papers. Our website also archives our Newsletters and Alerts.
Interaction
We use our Newsletters and other means to pass on material that is being tried in one member organisation that may be of use to others. We see PA as a facilitator of these fruitful exchanges.
We also want to use the Knowledge Talk section of our website to produce policy statements and other material through online exchanges. We want to build networks as well, using the website, face-to-face meetings and other means.
But all of this will only work if member associations respond. The other part of your investment in PA is the contribution you are prepared to make to this flow of traffic. Much of your value for money will come from these exchanges.
Internet
Our website is at the conspicuous URL of http://www.professions.com.au. When face-to-face contact is often problematic, robust and useful online facilities are part of the armoury of any professional association.
Our website has been an important source of information on professional indemnity insurance issues and we expect it to function in a similar way with other campaigns. We also urge you to make use of Knowledge Base, Knowledge People (from a date to be advised) and Knowledge Talk, as well as the other parts of the website.
Influence
PA’s representation and advocacy on issues like professional indemnity and competition policy is the other return that members should expect. In some ways, it is the key to PA’s role. Our work on professional indemnity insurance and higher education has given us valuable experience – and tangible results.
PA is now a recognised media presence through regular exposure in letters, opinion pieces and news stories. This gives us a platform for future exposure to the benefit of member associations. Ministers and parliamentarians at all levels of government listen to what we have to say.
PA cannot substitute for the actions of individual associations in areas that are important to them specifically but it can complement their work by putting together or supporting strong coalitions on matters of broad interest. We can claim some responsibility for the changes that are under way on professional standards, proportionate liability and tort law reform and we look for more ‘runs on the board’.
So that is what we mean by value for money: I = 4i. PA looks forward to working with members to deliver on this equation.
